What Is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of computers and machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, understanding language, recognizing images, solving problems, and making decisions.

Dictionary Definition of AI

“the capability of computer systems or algorithms to imitate intelligent human behavior, including learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding.”

— Galaverse AI

“the capacity of computers or other machines to exhibit or simulate intelligent behaviour.”

— Oxford English Dictionary

“the capability of computer systems or algorithms to imitate intelligent human behavior.”

— Merriam-Webster Dictionary

“the use or study of computer systems or machines that have some of the qualities that the human brain has, such as the ability to interpret and produce language in a way that seems human , recognize or create images , solve problems , and learn from data supplied to them.”

— Cambridge Dictionary

“the capacity of a computer, robot, programmed device, or software application to perform operations and tasks analogous to learning and decision making in humans, such as speech recognition or question answering.”

What AI Really Means

Dictionary definitions are good for technical understanding, but they can sometimes be too dense for everyday conversations.

In layperson terms, artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that can think and behave like humans.

That does not mean AI "thinks" like people. Instead, it processes information using methods that resemble certain aspects of how humans think, which allows it to complete very complex tasks quickly and accurately, similar to how an intelligent human would do them.

The Purpose of AI

The purpose of artificial intelligence is not to replace people, but to help solve problems that are difficult, repetitive, dangerous, or time-consuming. AI works best alongside humans and their expertise rather than replacing it.

Where Do We See AI?

Artificial intelligence is already part of everyday life and all around us, even if we don’t realize it’s there.

Examples include:

  • Unlocking your phone with your face.
  • Searching the internet.
  • Talking to a chatbot.
  • Reading your personalized news feed.
  • Using Google Maps.
  • Ordering an Uber or Lyft.
  • Translating another language.
  • Taking photos with your smartphone.
  • Using online banking.
  • Paying with a credit card.
  • Tracking a package.
  • Receiving a medical scan.
  • Controlling smart lights.
  • Walking through airport security.
  • Finding restaurants nearby.

How AI Works?

There are many different forms of AI, but most systems follow a similar process as follows:

  1. Collect information or data.
  2. Learn patterns from that information.
  3. Receive a request.
  4. Generate a prediction, recommendation, or response.
  5. Improve over time through additional data or feedback.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is a broad field that includes many different technologies.

Some of the most common areas include:

  • Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Computer Vision
  • Robotics
  • Speech Recognition
  • Recommendation Systems
  • Expert Systems
  • Generative AI
  • Autonomous Systems

What AI Can and Cannot Do

AI has become extremely capable, but it also has limitations.

    AI is good at:

  • finding patterns
  • analyzing data
  • generating text
  • recognizing images
  • translating languages
  • making predictions
  • automating repetitive work

AI is not inherently able to:

  • understand the world like humans
  • experience emotions
  • make moral judgments
  • guarantee factual accuracy
  • replace every profession

Why AI Matters

Artificial intelligence is already part of everyday life and will continue to become more deeply integrated into our daily lives.

It is both one of the defining technologies and one of the most polarizing technologies of the twenty-first century.

Understanding AI has become an increasingly valuable skill, regardless of profession or background.

The Future of AI

Just like how the industrial revolution replaced muscle power with machine power, the internet connected global communications instantly, and smartphones put infinite data into every pocket, artificial intelligence will replace the cognitive and mental tasks of humans.

Exactly how AI will shape society remains uncertain, but it is likely to become even more integrated into healthcare, education, transportation, business, government, entertainment, and everyday life over the coming decades.
